 Jamaica's Access to Information Act was passed in 2002 and came into effect in 2004. The Act grants all members of the public the right to obtain access to official documents held by public authorities unless the information is exempt from disclosure under limited categories provided by the Act. The right of access to information is an internationally recognised human right. Having the right of access to information promotes accountability, transparency and public participation in national decision making.

Jamaica Environment Trust v The Natural Resources Conservation Authority and the National Environment and Planning Agency HCV 05874 of 2010

JET filed an application for judicial review of the decision of the NRCA and NEPA to grant an environmental permit and beach licences to the National Works Agency (NWA) for the construction of a highway, two seawalls and a boardwalk at Palisadoes in Kingston, Jamaica. The Palisadoes strip is part of the Palisadoes/Port Royal Protected Area, declared under Jamaican law in 1998. It is also a wetland of international importance under the 1971 Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (The Ramsar Convention).

This case arises out of the Lamu Port-South Sudan Ethiopia-Transport Corridor project (LAPSSET), a large-scale transportation and infrastructure scheme with many individual components, including a railway, oil pipelines, oil refineries, tourism development, and a 32-berth port at Manda Bay in Lamu, Kenya.
